Composition Notes

“This is my 3rd solo effort as an independent musician. The Visionary is an album that, much like my first CD, Mind Over Matter, is a result of finding my own voice as a composer and drummer, and trying to be the change I’d like to see in the world. It is also the first time I’ve put together a suite (it runs at about 15 minutes), and it’s a three-part composition.

Just like my previous works, The Visionary is inspired by the need of being stimulated musically with the help of influences that range from Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Surrealism, all wrapped in Jazz-Fusion.” ~ Massimo

Guest Musicians Information

Barry Miles - Keyboards

Barry is a Grammy®-winning jazz musician who has not only played with virtually all of the greats over the past two decades, but through his own bands has introduced many of these greats to the music world. He is not only a composer and performer of individual songs that have become classics, but in the 60’s and 70’s, he was largely responsible for the genesis of an entire genre of music (often termed “fusion” and referring to music integrating elements of jazz, classical, rock and Eastern music).

Whether we’ve been aware of it or not, Barry’s music has been all around us for many years. He has composed and performed musical scores for hundreds of television programs, radio commercials, movies and movie trailers, and he has been on hundreds of pop, R&B and jazz recordings. For 15 years Barry was musical director for Roberta Flack.

Barry continues to play on records with many of the jazz world’s brightest lights. Most recently (2006) Barry renewed his long association with guitarist extraordinaire Al Di Meola, a collaboration resulting in the guitarist’s latest album “Consequences of Chaos.” But to keep him grounded, Barry simultaneously worked with Roberta Flack on her “Songs from the Neighborhood” CD, which won the 2006 Grammy® for Best Children’s Album.

John Swana - EVI

"John Swana is one of the most exciting trumpeters to arrive for a decade," declares Mark Gardner, co-author of Blackwell's Guide to Recorded Jazz. Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania - a suburb of Philadelphia - Swana took up the trumpet at the age of 11. He was drawn to jazz at the age of 17 after hearing Dizzy Gillespie.

Swana has performed in the Philadelphia and New York areas with well known jazz names, such as: Ralph Peterson, Charles Fambrough, Chris Potter, Uri Caine, Peter Leitch, Ralph Bowen and Robin Eubanks. He has also been heard with Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, Bob Mintzer, Grover Washington Jr., Tito Puente, Lenny White, Ed Simon, Adam Holtzman, Christian McBride, Marvin “Smitty” Smith and Tom Harrell.

Not a lot of people know that John is one of the masters of the EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument).

Steve Giordano - Guitar

Steve Giordano is a Philadelphia jazz guitarist who has lived, learned, loved and played in the most evolutionary age of creative music in America. As new technologies emerged, he tried them all: synthesizers, string synthesizers, multi-track tape machines, and samplers. Digital replaced analog and computers expanded possibilities beyond imagination. Entire jazz orchestras were synthesized in his studio. Jazz went from blues to swing, be-bop, straight-ahead, hard-bop, post-bop, fusion, progressive, and avant garde.

His first recording contract was with Muse records in the company of Mike Richmond, Billy Hart, and Barry Miles. “Playing from the heart with passion always” has been his motto.
